Martin described his individual, virtually free way of carving walking sticks as a progression from using an old broom handle, using a new broom handle with a rubber ferrell, to cutting sticks, and attaching handles carved in the shape of his hand.
He demystified the process of attaching the handle to the stick and has a gizmo for getting the angle right so that the drill does not come out of the side of the stick.
He has branched away from fingers and started to use the roots of trees to form the basis of a sculptured handle as in the owl above.
