Wood Carving and Other Things by Peter Davis (club member)

Peter started with some basic statements –
to Carve is to shape by cutting, to adorn with designs
a Carving is a figure or design carved from wood, stone, or other media
therefore Method is not designated, so must be by individual interpretation.
Then Peter asked what do carved objects mean or stand for? Looking at the Pacific Ocean carvings, the answer would seem to be that they have a religious significance, and there are some remarkable similarities from Taiwan to the Americas.  They are all tall and tree trunk shape even if they were made of stone, and represented images of protective forces.

The photos he showed us were

Easter Island

Taiwan

Australia\

Pacific Islands

Fiji Islands

Inca

North America Totem pole
